Synthetic Biology: Engineering and Democratization of Bio in the Context of Southeast Asia

Synthetic biology is an emerging field within the biosciences and biotechnology, which applies engineering principles to the design, build, test and learn of biological parts, devices, and systems. As an interdisciplinary field increasingly accelerated by the latest developments in high-throughput technologies and lowered costs of DNA sequencing and synthesis, synthetic biology is primed to engage stakeholders globally in developing sustainable applications for the most pressing issues around the world. This session will discuss how a revolution within the field will lead to democratization and increasing accessibility of biotechnology in not only developed but also developing countries and explore how innovations in synthetic biology will fuel the future bio-economy.
